During severe weather events flood-affected towns can become isolated. Due to logistical problems and dangerous conditions, rescue work can be delayed, leaving communities stranded in their homes for several days.
During the last few years of flood events, more than 125 townships have been cut off by floodwaters, requiring the assistance of the SES and more than 300 RFS brigades. The RFS saw a need to provide vehicle-based flood rescue kits, intended to be used when there is imminent risk to life and no other rescue service available.
In comes CSI. Lithgow Technology and Assembly Unit packed 4,000 flood rescue kits. The kits include a waterproof duffle bag packed with equipment such as personal floating devices, helmets, rescue tools and instructions. A total of seven containers were destuffed at Emu Plains and assembled into kits at Lithgow Correctional Centre. Dillwynia Technology and Assembly Unit also contributed by fixing RFS stickers to the helmets.
The work provided full time employment to inmates for close to six weeks.
The flood kits will not only help people in need, but contribute to the safety of first responders.
Congratulations to everyone involved.
