Education creates change

Here at CSI, we hope to inspire people in custody to feel proud of the work they do, supported by education to enhance the opportunity for post release employment.

When we have an inmate student who goes the extra mile, the CSI team become very proud.  One special person is Sue*.

Sue* came into custody with no formal schooling.  Through the Corrective Services NSW Pathways to Literacy and Numeracy program. Sue* was offered the opportunity and successfully completed a Foundations Skills Certificate I, “I was excited to have the opportunity to learn” Sue* said.

Sue* gained the taste for learning and went on to complete her Year 10 Certificate.  When asked how she felt, Sue* replied, “I was able to accomplish something in my life, I was excited to share with my family as it was my first ever certificate.”

Sue* continued to expand her knowledge by completing the Digital Literacy Basic Short course as the opportunity to learn encouraged her to do more.

Now settling herself back into the community, Sue* plans to enrol in a Certificate III in Community Services to help others, as her lived experience is sure to assist.  Her ultimate goal is to open her own animal therapy farm for troubled youth.

Sue* credits the support of Danielle, BSI Learning Foundation Skills trainer at Dillwynia Correctional Centre stating that going to class was fun and interesting.  Sue* is proud of her achievements, feeling empowered to accomplish something after she decided to put her mind to it. She was keen to not be another statistic.

Sue’s* suggestion is women should take full advantage of the amazing learning opportunities Correctional Centres offer, as it can make good use of your time which then really benefits you in the future.

Congratulations Sue* on your accomplishments and we look forward to the opening of your animal therapy farm.
