Mentors are important

Mentors have been the driving force behind countless achievements throughout history, offering guidance, sharing wisdom, and providing encouragement during life’s most challenging moments. They help individuals overcome barriers, build confidence, and realise their true potential.

Sometimes mentors come in our world within controlled environments, others come in unexpectedly.

Jane* was an inmate at Dillwynia Correctional Centre and was talking to John Hargrave,  a/Education Services Coordinator. Jane* shared to John that she was unable to read. Word lists were provided regularly, then entered Nicole* (the Dillwynia Library clerk) who offered to teach Jane how to read.

Day by day, week by week, Jane* was learning to identify words.  A broader volunteering mentoring group supported Jane* giving her confidence to learn and the confidence to ask for help.

As Jane’s* abilities grew, so did her opportunities for work. An Inmate Clerk work position became available at CSI Logistics and Jane* jumped at the chance.

Jane* enjoys her new job believing it gives her purpose with great work skills to help her obtain work once she is back into the community.

Well done, Jane*, keep up the amazing work, and bravo to John & Nicole* for taking the initiative and reaching out to help someone.
