Street Library, small libraries, big impact

Street Library is a grassroots locally based initiative that encourages literacy, sharing, and community connection. These small, free libraries are placed in front yards and are generally accessible from the street, allowing anyone to take a book, give a book, or simply enjoy reading, no memberships or due dates required.

Founded by Nic Lowe in Sydney in 2016, Street Library Australia has grown into a national movement. Today, there are 6,050 registered Street Libraries across Australia, each reflecting the generosity and interests of its local community.

Street Library Australia has been a partner with CSI Furniture at Macquarie Correctional Centre since 2017, when it became the unit’s first customer. Street Libraries are manufactured in‑house, with production focused on two main designs, the Big Pete and the Original Shed.

Up to five people in custody work on Street Library Australia products at any time, gaining hands‑on woodworking skills. Some participants are also completing a Certificate II in Cabinet Making, building pathways to employment after release.

Through this partnership, Street Library Australia supports literacy and connection in communities, while CSI Furniture supports skills development, meaningful work, and positive change, one library and one book at a time.
